Genentech has an immediate need for a senior Storage Administrator in the Enterprise Storage Services (ESS) group located in Redwood City. The SAS group is a part of the System Operations Group of Corporate Information Technology (CIT). The ESS group is responsible for the administration of all enterprise storage and backup/recovery system at Genentech sites. The position will support many NAS and SAN storage devices supporting several customer groups. We currently support approximately 32 NetApp filers (FAS960s to FAS6070s), 16 HP EVAs (EVA4000, EVA5000, EVA6000 and EVA8000), 3 HP XPs (XP1024 and XP12000) and expect strong growth in this environment over the next few years. The position is at a senior level so strong knowledge of all applicable technologies is required, but a focus needs to be in NAS technology. We expect the applicant to have a strong passion for technology and be a fast, self-motivated learner. This position will require great teamwork skills to coordinate and support other system administrators, architects and engineers.
Responsibilities * Setup, configure, and perform day-to-day maintenance and administration of all Genentech's corporate storage and backup infrastructure * Handle day-to-day problems and requests related to Backup/Recovery and Storage Operations as a 3rd Level Administrator, perform Root Cause Analysis and continuous improvement, and act as an escalation point for Level 1 & 2 support teams * Create Backup/Recovery and Storage documentation and lead cross training with other groups * Perform performance and capacity management of storage infrastructure and participate in budget forecasting * Develop disaster recovery plans for storage infrastructure * Evaluate and recommend vendor products and services * Partnership with Architecture and Engineering team and vendors for backups/recoveries, storage configuration and testing during Proof-of-Concept investigations and product implementations 8 Lead cross-functional initiatives with customers and peers in other areas of CIT (Architecture, Engineering, Development, Operations, Change Management, Project * Management, etc.) to implement secure solutions that meet Genentech's business needs * Participate in 7x24 pager rotation and monthly maintenance windows * Complete appropriate validation paperwork as required with minimal deviations or discrepancies
Requirements * Outstanding customer skills, written, oral and interpersonal skills * Strong teamwork, collaboration, mentoring and project management skills * Strong analysis and decision-making skills and be able to conduct briefings and participate in technical cross-functional meetings * Minimum five years working with Network Appliance hardware and Data OnTap Operating System required * Strong knowledge of the following storage hardware: HP XP (Hitachi 9980), HP EVA and Brocade Silkworm Fabric family * Strong knowledge of NAS/SAN design and implementation * Strong commitment to process and understanding of change and configuration management principles in support of validated environments * Systems administration experience in Sun Solaris, IBM AIX, Linux and Windows 2000/2003 Server with emphasis on disk device management, NFS, and CIFS. Scripting experience, such as Perl and shell, strongly desirable * Knowledge of backup/recovery using EMC Legato Networker, NetApp data protection suite * (SnapVault, SnapMirror, OSSV), NetApp Virtual Tape Library (VTL) and StorageTek tape libraries strongly desirable * Ability to work in an unsupervised team environment required * Preferred Experience * Four-year degree or equivalent experience, PLUS five (5) to Seven (7) years work experience as a storage administrator. * Experience with GxP validated environments is a plus. Knowledge of ITIL Hammer is a plus.
